Hi everyone, I'm Blue and I'm an addict
I'm a tropical fish breeder from Wellington (area), New Zealand and I cover everything from guppies all the way to discus and rare L-numbers (fancy plecos). So venturing into cold water creatures has been a slow and fun adventure between heaps of water changes and feedings of the babies in my fish room.
I've been keeping lotls for about a year now, ever since friends gave me a batch of eggs to raise up. It was a good batch spawned by a leucistic male and a dark wildtype female and I fed them on HEAPS of daphnia and moved them on to chopped frozen bloodworms. After taking out the pick of the litter (including a leucistic with dark head and spots) this is what went to the pet shops.
Sadly enough the three that I kept disappeared from their outside home about 3 months later
The neighbour reported a stork/heron type bird in our yard about the same time it happened, but honestly don't even want to dwell on it. Circle of life and all.
I still have some young growing out from those same parents (obviously a later batch) but I also
acquired some Golden Albinos a few months ago and I'm proud to have discovered a batch of eggs over the weekend which I'm watching carefully and comparing to the embryo series to determine if they're fertile or duds. Looking good so far, with development at Day 4/5 almost identical to the photos.
I just wanted to say hello and thank everyone for the wealth of information on this site. I look forward to meeting all of you - particularly my fellow Kiwi Lotl keepers!
