Growth on plant

Hey I was wondering if anyone knows what this black growth/algae is on one of the plants in my tank. The tank currently houses an axolotl and is ~16°C pH 7.8 with relatively hard water. There is a 2' grow light on a timer situated above the tank as well

It looks like an algal or bacterial bloom. It's nothing to worry about, they are relatively common, especially in recently set up tanks. They can spread very quickly sometimes, but almost always burn themselves out once the excess nutrients in the water are all used up.

Yeah, looks like algae. The fish guy in me says take out the plants with the algae before it spreads! And consider dialing back the number of hours your light is on.

How long is the light on? Do you have a lot of plants?

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
