Look what I got for mother's day!

PS: She was NOT happy about me poking around her babies. She laid 2 the other night, and I took both those (she didn't nest those, just dropped 'em so they might be slugs, although they candle normally so far), and I took 4 of these, giving me 6 and leaving her with 5 total.

handsome Mama! What species is she? She's sure giving you the hairy eyeball in that pic.

She's a black ratsnake.

This is the third year they've laid eggs, but all previous years' eggs have been slugs. This is also the first time she's laid more than 4 or 5, which makes me think they might be fertile. Gonna candle 'em again tonight and see how they're developing!

Why do you remove some of the eggs?

I initially thought I was going to incubate them. Now I'm experimenting on which set of eggs hatches better, the ones under my care or the ones in the tank.

Of course, I can't check the ones in the tank though, as she continues to be fairly protective over them. Hopefully that doesn't last long!

Well, at one time. They always pick when I'm least capable of caring for them!
