I am about to start work on a new set up and would like to know if anyone has ever used Clay in theirs ?

Looking at photos of habitats and the pool local to me which has a wonderful array of amphibians they all seem to have a large amount of clay both above and beneath the water !
I have used DIY spray foam on previous projects and I am considering using it again BUT I would prefer a natural approach !

Can anyone help me ?

I know paddletail owners will use clay pots as shelters for their newts, and of course the hydroballs often seen in poison frog set-ups are made out of clay.

Obviously this is way way way late, but my hope is that somebody with the same question will find it and this will help them.

The original poster is referring to actual wet clay as a background and scaping material. The short answer is it can be done and is safe, however I don't recommend it. The reason is that clay is "finicky". If it's too wet it gets sloppy, and if it is not moist enough it starts to get cracks due to shrinkage.

There's a guy on dendroboard.com named Grimm and he has used clay in his dart frog setups. He specifically told me he would never use clay again, he prefers the GreatStuff spray foam. However he does show how he used the clay in some of his youtube videos. jgrimmier's Channel - YouTube

Hope this helps somebody
