They are hatching!!!
two of them so far, im separating eggs into containers.
I AM SO EXCITED!!
brine shrimp are hatching at the moment.
Any tips on how to keep them healthy?
 
i put a tablespoon and a bit of aquarium salt in a litre of water in an upside down bottle. i then put a teaspoon of eggs in then i put the air stone in it and ive put a heat mat next to the water. now do i leave it for 24 hours then take the air stone out then they will hatch?
 
only if i put my finger by them, other than that they just sit there.
my brine shrimp hatchery calls for one tablespoon aof salt to one quart of water??
so im not sure about hatch rates
 
jenny - no do not take the air stone out of the brine shrimp hatchery until you are ready to harvest the brine shrimp. They do not always hatch in 24 hours. There are many variables. Sometimes you get bad eggs or do not have the appropriate salt/water mix and nothing hatches at all.

If you do not feed all of the batch of brine shrimp, put the air stone back in with the remaining shrimp.

Heather- if you are asking how to keep the baby brine shrimp healthy? Hopefully you will feed them all before you need to feed the shrimp. I kept 2 to 3 batches of brine shrimp "brewing" set to hatch on different days/times. That allowed me to provide constant food for the baby axolotls even if there was a batch of shrimp that didn't hatch very well.

So will the brine shrimp hatch as soon as i take the stone out even if it hasnt been 24 hours and the water is still rather cold/room temperaturey?
 
Jenny the air stone being removed has nothing to do with making brine shrimp hatch. If you remove the air stone before they have hatched (other than for a short period of time) they would most likely not hatch. The eggs normally do not hatch in 24 hours at room temp, unless you keep your house abnormally warm.

If you want brine shrimp to hatch every 24 hours you need to add heat to the brine shrimp hatchery.

Two ways that have both worked for me:
Adding an aquarium heater to the brine shrimp hatchery or add a light with a 60 watt bulb over the top of the hatchery.

The light method works better if you put the hatchery inside another container to help hold in the heat. I use an empty 12 gallon aquarium (no lid on the aquarium). I can fit 3 of the 2 liter pop bottle brine shrimp hatcheries inside of it. I use a clip on type light fixture with metal shade and hang it so it is about 4 - 5" above the shrimp hatcheries.

I have had no problems hatching brine shrimp every 24 hours using those methods. If you can not produce brine shrimp in 36 - 38 hours or your hatches are very low, odds are your brine shrimp eggs are old or not high quality, or your salt/water solution is not the proper mix.
 
yeah but i cant find the instructions. now all i have is an email off the person bought from saying good quality 35g marine salt per litre.

i dunno how much 35g is though. and when on websites it says a tablespoon - when i did food tech at school, the tablespoons were massive. my tablespoons at home are normal tablespoon size what most people have.
 
ok i have put a light over the bottle.

It is a bit over a litre. well maybe just under a litre and a half and i put one and a bit over a half of (one of my size) tablespoons
 
i can see this not working though.

im gonna have to buy some scales.
 
Jenny, see if one of your local vets will weigh out a gram of salt for you. They usually have very accurate electronic scales, and don't mind taking the extra second to help, especially if it's animal related! I've been taking my possum to the vet here for weighing once a week because I couldn't find a small scale that was accurate and easy to read.
 
Jenny, are you sure thats the right measurements for ur brine shrimp?
Mine(read off the box mind you) calls for one tablespoon of salt to one quart of water. Very different from yours

my shrimp hatched! i think i put too much eggs in though theres trillions.

it says 35g per litre.

and another site said a tablespoon and a half per litre.

what is a quatre in litres? or is it quatre of a litre?

one of em that hatched premeturliest is still alive and the other 2 that were hatched premeturly the next day died. so if it still survives im gonna keep that one. im not sure if its eating though. there is another one that has just hatched on its own to. its hard to put in just a few shrimps so i am able to count them. i think i need to buy a small pipette or something.
 
I use a level 1/2 of a teaspoon for the brine shrimp eggs when hatching them as a treat for my fish and frogs.

1/2 a teaspoon of eggs is a lot of baby brine shrimp.
 
fwiw, the san francisco bay brand is:
1 liter of water
2 tbsp salt
1 tsp eggs. hope this helps
