Heat is getting to him

Hi everyone,
My axie Shadow has just started to recover from what i think is from eating pebbles. Now i think he is suffering from the heat. He sits at the bottom of the tank like he is dead with his mouth open. I live in Australia and it is at it's high 30's. I don't want to put him in the fridge because of the temperature change, and i have tried putting ice block and cubes in the tank but it doesn't seem to make any difference.
 
looby, I'm also from Australia and the heat has been crazy where I am as well. I've put all 3 of my guys in the fridge at around 9 degrees, just used normal tap water temperature for the initial transfer and let the fridge gradually cool it down. A week later my guys are quite happy to be in there and the heat stress one in particular was suffering has cleared up.
 
Only three months of it to go. All us aussies are gonna have to put our heads togeather and work out a better solution.

Either that or say "stuff it" and go out and buy a $600+ cooler.

This heat has me bummed!

If your tank temperature is getting high enough to kill your axolotl, you need to find a way to cool the tank down and keep it down or put the axolotl in the fridge and leave it there until you can keep the tank temperature down.

Adding ice to the tank for a day isn't going to provide the constant cool temperatures the axolotl needs.

Hope noone minds, didn't think it was worth starting a new post for...
But, I've just moved dudette (renamed - used to be little dude but I'm now positive he is actually a she) into her now cycled 3 foot new home.
She ate the first night in there but now she won't eat. Can't get the temp below 25 degrees C and I think also she's stressed from the spray bar current.
Should I put her in the fridge for a while and see if this helps to settle her down? Am concerned cause normally she's such a pig and won't pass up food.
 
Well I've managed to sort out the spray bar issue...now just the heat...Anybody know how to do a rain dance? lol

im also in australia and having problems with keeping temp right for my axy's and for myself
but i might have to try fridge my male stays at top of tank all the time and is not eating

if you float 5 ice packs or more i know it will bring it down a few degrees.
 
Hi all,

Dudette is eating again...tho not as much as normal. Heat is definitely taking it's toll...she's made a new friend by the name of Westinghouse lol. (that's the fridge by the way).

I have a 3 foot tank and the ice pack are just not enough to get it down. I've tried this as well as fans and ice fans on top. As well as adding trays of ice blocks. Not alot to be done except the fridge. I'm just not rich enough to go out and buy a chiller right now...(maybe i should ask my boss for a raise hehe).

We are getting 33degrees C right now...Not nice at all and summers only started.

If anyone comes up with a brilliant plan feel free to let me know

what about doing water changes with ice itself, such as buying a bag of ice and taking outa third of the water and replacing it with ice?
 
ice is quite dirty when bought like that. but that is a good idea jeff. maybe just colder water from the tap. but it would have to be done fairly often like every hour :S
 
Actually funny you should mention this, my other half suggested building some sort of ice machine that spits out an ice block every 10 seconds...
Great idea in theory hun! Like to see him build one tho....lol. Not to mention the mess from the tank overflowing with too much water lol.

I'm afraid unless i win lotto it'll be the fridge for the time being.
 
Allthough dirty, I bet that store bought ice doean't contain anything particurly harmfull, after all they do exist in nature and all its unwanted garbage.
 
hey, i'm from QLD too, and I have only had my axi for a few days. Up till now he has been really hungry, but this morning is off his food. I've read that the fridge helps, but also that quick changes in temp can be bad too. HELP!!!!!
 
he is an idea, buy a package of ice or two, and leave it in the bag. Then rinse the bag off, and put that in the tank, after removing some water first. This has got to work, and I am amazed I didn't come up with this idea sooner.
 
tammy, how often are you feeding him? depending on his size every 2-3 days is sufficient. also what are you feeding him? what is the water temp? your water paremeters? also is your tank cycled? i wouldnt put him in the fridge just because he hasnt eaten for one day. however if your tank temp is above 24C i would as long as your fridge isnt below 4C. if you need more info on putting him in the fridge just say so and ill give you some more instructions

For those posters having problems lowering the temp. My tank is 6ft by 3ft so very large and I can lower the temp by 2 degrees C by placing three 1.25 frozen bottles of water in the tank. I change them every morning before I go to work, as soon as I get home and then again before I go to bed. The tank rarely gets over 18 degrees - and my freezer is filled with frozen drinks bottles!

You do have to be vigilant to keep the temp down...if you don't want to use the fridge, I find the esky also works well ;-)

You could be onto something there...I'll have to give it a go.

Life would be much easier if I had a chest freezer..lol. The little fridge freezer is already full of axolotl cooling devices. My other half is beginning to complain that he's hotter than the axies...(I've stolen all the fans,ice packs etc for the axies hehe)... I said "hun they suffer from heat exhaustion ya know".
(I don't think he was impressed lol)
 
Yeah, I've only got a small tank (Tank set up and axie were a gift so its about 25L and Julio is still quite young) and one frozen 1/5 litre bottle drops the temp 2-4 degrees.
When he's bigger and I get a larger tank I think it'll be time for something more reliable.
Julio seems to like it, he gets inquisitive and swims around it, nudging it. Often sits right underneath it letting the cooler water come down over him
