Hi. I am new to all of this. Have just bought an Axolotyl for my son and am finding him a lot more work than I expected!

Can anyone tell me whether it is normal for them to change from light yellow to dark orange within hours of eating a guppie? Also, his face appears to be wrinkling up and he has lost all the fine hairs from his gills. He is doing a lot of floating on top of the water and hasn't eaten now for 5 days. Should I be worried?

Hi Karen,

welcome to the forums :) Sorry to hear you are having trouble with your axie though...

With your axolotl, it would help a lot if you could post your tank readings for ammonia/nitrite/nitrate. Ideally they should read 0/0/10-40 respectively. Also is your tank temperature under 20C? Anything higher than that can stress your axolotl. Other things to watch for are too strong current from your filter and using gravel as a substrate as they can both cause health problems too.

I would recommend posting in the 'Sick Axie' section in future as you will probably get more people view your post :)

Thanks Sarah

I have just discovered the sick axie section. Thank you!

I presume you get test kits from the pet shop. I will have a look asap.
