Hey all! I have always loved amphibians and reptiles, though my parents never let me keep them growing up. In 2019 I finally got my first reptile, a eurydactylodes agricolae. He is so precious to me. :)
I wish to keep newts and toads in the near future. I am especially interested in dwarf and pygmy species of salamanders, which don't have much readily available care info, which is why I am here!

Welcome! Also from B.C here (North Van). Lot's of great information on here.

Just be aware when you are looking at acquiring any amphibians of the provincial laws on keeping them. Here in B.C we have the B.C Wildlife Act which prevents us legally keeping a number of species and even entire families.

This is the part of schedule A of the B.C Wildlife Act that applies to amphibians and what we can't legally keep here in B.C:
3 Amphibians of the following species:

(a)all species of the family Ambystomatidae — mole salamanders;

(b)all species of the family Dicamptodontidae — giant salamanders;

(c)all species of the family Plethodontidae — lungless salamanders;

(d)all species of the family Pelobatidae — spadefoots;

(e)all species of the family Hylidae — treefrogs;

(f)all species of the family Ranidae — true frogs;

(g)all species of the genus Taricha — newts;

(h)all species of the genus Ascaphus — tailed frogs;

(i)all species of the genus Bufo — toads.

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
