Hi all,

I am new to this forum and to Connecticut, and traditionally, my favorite pets/animals have been amphibians.

For those who have lived in CT longer than I have and/or are more versed with CT law, I was wondering if I would be allowed to order amphibians (especially newts, salamanders, and treefrogs - as these are my favorites) via shipping from outside of the state (whether it is via interstate or international) without a permit. If I do need a permit, does anyone have any idea about how to get one? It seems like DEEP does not offer them for pet ownership…

I was also wondering if it would be permitted to buy, sell, and/or adopt pets within Connecticut without a permit, or if one is required.

If you could please let me know, I would really appreciate it. CT law has been extremely confusing to me. Thank you!

Hello! I’m also in CT and unfortunately I feel your pain. The law is very very confusing. I was planning on actually calling DEEP when I end up breeding my California newts.
As far as my research and experience has shown, you do not need a permit to own these animals, however ordering from out of state could be a different story. I know of a local, non chain pet shop that used to order animals for people, and they do indeed get some fairly unusual reptiles and herps in there, but I don’t know if they still order for people specifically. I will ask when I go next.
