Hello I recently received/rescued a newt from my aunt. He had been living his whole life (about 5 years) in a punch bowl hence his name, Punch. I moved him into a 10 gallon tank that my parents had laying around. He doesn’t have much right now, just some stones, fake plants (silk), and a cave to hide. I’m looking to move him into a 20 gallon. I’m on here to look for more information on plants, aquarium upkeep, and general newt care.

Hello and welcome!

One thing you should be sure of right away is to put a top on the tank, at least around the edges. Newts can climb glass, not well, but well enough to escape. They cannot however go upside down. So your aunts punchbowl probably had enough curve to the glass to keep the newt contained, but a regular straight sided aquarium does not.

There are a ton of videos out there on aquascaping in aquariums for information on plants, cycling a new tank, lights to use, etc. It's all relevant to newts as well. Just keep in mind you should be doing regular water changes, keep the temperature cool in the tank (less then 70 F) and cycle the aquarium. That will mean in the early stages doing big water changes daily until you get your cycle established. You will want to look up 'cycling' an aquarium right away. If you have more specific questions feel free to ask, the community is pretty conservative care wise, but is very knowledgeable. Good luck.
