Hello!

I am a teenager who lives in NY state and started fishkeeping with a ten gallon tank with five goldfish and two koi. I realized within about three months I was overstocked (it's a miracle... I never did a single water change and they all survived) and I gave away the goldfish. The koi kept growing bigger and I was able to give away one of my koi. The other two are hanging out in a 55 gallon, waiting for me to find them a new home. (I believe I've found one.)

I was interested in guppies starting in September 2004. In October I joined the site, and in December, I got a five gallon hexagon tank and my first guppies! (Two males, four females I think.) MTS hit me hard. Another ten gallon and a 2.5 minibow later, I began breeding guppies. Then I moved the koi from their ten gallon to a 55 gallon.

In October 2006, I got Rhythm, my betta.

That's pretty much the fish story.

But now, after the koi are gone, I'll have a 55 gallon in which I believe I'd like to put two or three axolotls. I'm just having trouble finding out if they are legal in NY state. If anyone could provide some insight into this, please let me know. :D

Welcome to the site! Your fish keeping skills will certainly help greatly with maintaining axolotls in captivity. If you haven't visited Axolotl.org I would highly recommend you do so. There is also an axolotl specific section of this forum.

You are probably safe with axolotls as they are all captive bred and I haven't heard a story of any place where they are banned, but I'm sure someone can give you a more definitive answer.

Feel free to ask any questions you have in the axolotl section and again, welcome to caudata.org!

There are a couple of states where axolotls cannot be shipped, but to my knowledge NY is not one of them. There are some sources listed here:

A reputable supplier should be able to tell you about any legal issues; all the suppliers on that page are reputable.
