**HELP**7 Axolotls Rescued From My Local Aquarium!!

I dont know the sex, he/she isnt eating at the moment. And has a rather deformed front leg only 2 fingers and its a bit twisted and lumpy. Poor little thing I hope he/she pulls through. Ill take another picture and see if we can get the sex identified!

And also I dont keep them in that tub...its just for the salt baths, they are in a very large poly box at the moment with plants & places to hide. It makes it easier for me to treat them. When the fungus has gone they will go into a beautiful tank!
 
Bad News!!! I found the white one dead this morning, and I think it was my fault. I have been giving them all a salt baths for the last 3 days, Im not sure if there was any fungus on the white one but I thought it was best to do them all. And when I put the white axie in last night he/she didnt look happy, swam around the tub about 5 times with his head out. And it also hadnt eaten but he/she wasnt skinny so I dont think it was that. I also put a squirt of an ant fungal spray. He/she always seemed to have some difficulty keeping down in the water and had to constantly come up for air which im assuming was because he has no gills.
Does anyone know why it died????

I'm so sad, I saved them and I think I killed him with stress!!
 
From what you said you did all you can to help them , and you have improved their quality of life..it is sad that one died but you did all you can,

hi there im new to this site and only joined 1 hour ago but i would just like to say i think what u did for the poor little mites was really nice and i think you did all you could and if it did die from stress then it was from its previous home and not with you i think they are quiet difficult to keep them happy 100% of the time anyway iv had mine for around 2 years and at the mo iv having a few probs with floating and not eating so don't feel bad they have a better life now than they did before so good luck with the progress.x.

I am so sorry to hear that the white one died. It was such a cool colour. Have any others died?

Most axies HATE salt baths anyway. Spyyk once leapt clean out of hers when I was treating for parasites.

At least you gave him a good chance at life - don't let it worry you too much, you're doing a grand job. These things happen to the best of us.
 
I am so sorry at your loss. It was a nice axolotl. But, hey-at least you gave it a better life than rotting away in a neglectful pet-store. That sure is something to be proud of. I wish you the best of luck with your other monsters. Well I would just check to makesure you are not ODing them on the meds and the salts, just to be on the safe side.
 
I just want to say don't blame yourself. Blame the jerks at the aquarium who're too lazy to learn how to take care of their animals.
this kind of thing gets me SO angry. It's bad enough when regular consumers don't know what their doing... But when people who are SUPPOSED to be responsible for educating people on caring for their animals don't even take the time to find out...ooh. that irritates me.

I dont know if the white axie was a boy or a girl but sadly that one died a few weeks ago, and we have had another death since poor little things only one is eating at the moment, still Im not giving up hope yet!
 
Vicky, the white one may have been sick, anaemic, which is why there was lack of colour. Our first introduction to sickness in our axies were when two of ours Brodie and Fifi became very anaemic (they're leucs like that one was), completely white, no colour, occasional feeding, some tailchasing then completely stopped eating. They went white, then a greyish colour. Took 7 weeks for Fifi to come right, 5 weeks for Brodie. I had to keep them separated from main tank for that time, 3 weeks of which were spent in the fridge, salt baths for 2 of the weeks.
 
Hello, I dont know if the white one was a boy or a girl, sadly he/she died a few weeks ago now. And we have had another one die since, only 1 of the remaining 5 is eating, but I havent given up hope yet...fingers crossd!!
 
OOOOPS i just realized that I have written a reply to a question that was on the last page, I thought that was the end of the post....silly me, oh and kapo thats interesting what you have written about, thanks for all your help!
 
Oh dear another one has died, we found him/her this morning. To be honest we thought it was going to die when we looked at him/her last night, looked the same way all the others did when they died. Near the top and the tail starts droopin loosing its original shape. Is it possible they are trying to Morph?
Oh just for the record the water tests, temp, tank size, etc is all fine!
 
Maybe it would be an idea to put the remaining ones in containers in the fridge and just do daily waterchanges with dechlorinated water.

Some more bad news...i have found another 2 dead today, so that only leaves to out of 7 and one of them doesnt look great to be honest.
Kapo i could put the other 2 in the fridge but i was thinkng wouldnt the small containers, disruption of water changes and having the fridge door constantly open and close (big family) be more stressful to them?
 
oh and to Bellabelloo thanks for offering to help, but i dont think ill have any left soon, this is just horrid I wanted to help but it hasnt worked for the poor things, at least they are spending the last of their days in a beautiful big tank. Oh dear its very sad!
 
Victoria, I can understand your concerns especially if you've never used the fridge method before.

That's why when you place a lid on the container/s you then wrap it in the dishcloth. This will stop any temperature fluctations and light flashing which is caused from normal fridge useage.

The 100% daily waterchanges are needed as with the container being so much smaller any poo/vomit/urine will foul the water - ie ammonia, hence it needs to be changed completely daily. You need to keep a bottle or 2 of dechlorinated water in the fridge so the temperature is the same as their container/s when you do the waterchanges.

The fridge will slow their metabolisms down to give them a chance to heal and destresses them. Fridge temp. should be no lower than 5C, use a thermometer in a glass of water placed in fridge if unsure - check after 20-30minutes.
 
Thankyou Kapo you really are a great help to everyone, I will put them in the ridge tonight if thats what you think is the best thing to do. But i was wondering how long Should I keep them in there for? and also should I continue to try to get them to eat?
