HELP! Attacked Juvi Axi - no limbs working

well my dad decied it might be best to amputate her front leg as now its just bone and a bit of dead skin on her hand. How would be best to do this ourselves ? I will try and post some more pics when i get home tonight of her back legs as there is lots of shredded skin (or what appears to be) and i dont want to mistake this for fungus. and i am at a lost at what to do with them.

I am now starting to question why she got attacked in the first place. she had been fine with the other 2 for around two months , and about aweek ago i took her out because i noticed she had a sore leg , once the leg looked healed i but her back in with the other two, and then two days later this happend.

i know that one of the bigger axis is male , and i am unsure of the smaller one's sex and also the one that has been attacked. But i noticed after the attack that on one of the axi's its feet had turned compleatly black.

could this be a sexual attack on her , or because i had removed her and then placed her back in?

Hi Chloe,

Sorry to hear that having trouble with your axolotl, but bear in mind that you're taking all the right measures thus far.

As Jennewt has already mentioned, the best option for amputation is to take your axolotl to a specialised vet. However, seeing as you've decided to roll up your sleeves for this one you might want to take a look at this thread:

You've pretty much answered the question for yourself here. Size difference. However, in some cases, it is possible for an axolotl to mistaken another for food, owing to their poor eyesight. I'd suggest that you keep these axolotls separate until reach an equal size.

Good luck!

Jay.

UPDATE-

It’s now been four days since tiki's attack and she is still in the fridge. I have uploaded some pics . The first one is from the day of the attack and the second and third have been taken now.

I think she is making a but better recovery than i antisipated , but we have still decided her front left leg needs amputating , her right front leg is quite fleshy , but is still attached so i have decided to leave this one for the time being and amputate at a later date if no progress of healing is made.

Her back right leg is quite swollen? i think - and is not moving so i am unsure if this could possibly be dislocated?

The Back left one has full movement.

I would appreciate if you could give me some opinions, i have read the links on amputation and i have found them really helpful.

P.s - i have not been giving her saltbaths , and unsure as to how long after the amp i should start doing this as i am sure she is getting fungus on the front left leg.

Thanks Guys

If you mean whereabouts on the leg, it's really quite hard to say. Just follow the instructions on those threads - I'm sure one of them (probably spazzatron's) has a before picture that was marked with where she planned on making the cuts. Maybe fashion up something like this with a good picture of the poor lil chap and if it looks like you're way off I'm sure somebody will say something. Just use your better judgment I guess - healthy skin = good, dying skin with bone hanging loosely=bad

You said your dad is going to help you - as in the instructions on those threads, it would be best to have one person doing the slicing and dicing, and another person to hold him still. Do you think you've got the stomach to do either of those things? I don't think I could handle it - that's something you want to know before you start!

Good luck!

Those legs will probably have to be amputated..
Has anyone else mentioned or seen the size of that axolotls clocoa? It's either one hell of a man or there's some blockage going on there..

Whoa. Hadn't noticed before now, but DEFINITELY a boy.

YES lol ,i thought she was a boy for a long time , but with her being so cute when i first got her i gave her a girls name and "she" as just been a "she" ever since.

About the amputation - i wont be present at the time, i will get my sister to do it. As i am to soft to amputate my baby lol.

Does anyone have any idea as what to do with the back mangled leg?x

nope his front left leg defiantly , not sure about the right one - i think i might leave this to see if it starts to heal. x

she really doesn't look too well, the front left definately will have to go its only hanging there
leave the rest to see if they heal, i hope it does

Hello Guys

My dad ampuutated tikis leg yesterday and it went well, she didn't flinch and there was no blood.

i am going to keep her in the fridge for a few more weeks, and start giving her salt baths next week as she is showing signs of fugus on one of her legs.

will post pic of her(his) new stump at a later date x

I've been following this thread with concern for your poor axie. I really hope he recovers well, what a stressful time it must be for you

Hello Guys

Sorry for not keeping you informed with updates on tiki, but the net has been down at my house.

She/He is doing really well , i have just had to amputate the other 2 savaged legs , as they had died down and regain to decompose. The stump from her 1st amputation (this was performed about 2weeks ago) is healing really well, although it stump is still kinda open (if you know what i mean) and so far we have had no fungus.

She is still in the fridge and i was wondering how long i should keep her in there for?

Bye Guys.
