Hi all

Last week i saw my little Maui lying on his back. I thought he was dead and stuck my hand in the tank which probed him to quickly swim away. He did this for a while. I offered him a worm which he ate and this seemed to stop the strange behaviour.

This week i saw him do it again and his tail was curled! Something that has never happened in the two years that i have owned him. I immediately dosed the tank with some prime and only did a 90% water change today seeing that my prime was finished so i had to go get some.

He swims rapidly and then lies on his back on the bottom of the tank. He has an impairment, he has a crooked back wich i think is a birth defect, but it never seemed to bother him much.

This week he has been struggling to swim a lot and he keeps his front legs at a 90 degree angle downwards and they are stiff. It seems like he can't move them but he does when he propels away. He also tried to eat his tail yesterday and i had to pull his tail from his mouth. In turn a bit of skin was dangling from his tail but not too much damage was done. He has never done anything like this before. I think it might be because he is in pain:(

He is still eating and pooping. I'm so worried.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
