Help dont know what to do

I have had my Hemi I for about 2 months and all has been good till the last week. He has been staying at the top of the tank more than not and his gills are all shriveled up. We had him a 10 gallon tank then a friend gave us a 100 gallon tank so we moved his to it. He has a thin layer of play sand and a hide with a few plants. I have a couple of live plants that have started to grow. What can I do to get his fluffy gills back.

Is your tank cycled? What are the water levels like, those could be causing problems.

Could you post a picture?

The fact that you're from Oklahoma makes me suspect you have a tiger salamander larva and not an axolotl.
