Hello! I am an axolotl breeder and have found great success with raising and breeding axolotls but I really could use some help. Recently I acquired an albino gold with het melonoid and Lucy. She/he live in a 55 gallon bare bottom tank with a slightly larger copper and have gotten along just fine. But his/her gills have curled quite a bit and looks underweight despite me feeding both the same amount I am finding it hard to perk her up. The other axie is in perfect health and is a great eater so I do not think it’s heat or water current related and while he/she is a fussy eater I do not find her barfing up her food is there any advice anyone can give me?

She looks VERY skinny, I agree. Since ur a breeder u probably have blackworms, I would feed her those. Also waxworks are very very high in fat and some people use them to get some weight on their axolotl, also, what are your parameters?/

I did try live blackworms but it didn’t seem to catch her interest. My parameters were no ammonia or nitrates and around 7.5 ph it really confused me. I unfortunately lost her very soon after posting this however I am unable to find a definite cause. The other axolotls in my care are under the same diet and water conditions and are all in great health. Thank you for the response though.

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
