ok I have a REALLY boring tank...just some rocks and some plants and a internal filter

I personally hate the rocks and would much prefer the sand but where on earth do you get it from? Where can i get axie safe sand?

My tank is sooo boring and i am looking for ideas of what to do with it

....any ideas?

(by the way the tank is a 33 gallon)

oh and how on earth do you guys clean your amazingly intricate set-ups?

i too started with rocks and got sick of them. then went through numerous substrates. finally settled on pool filter sand for all four of my tanks. i got the sand from a pool shop, much cheaper than the local fish store. just make sure the sand isnt to deep.
cleaning isnt too hard, every week when you do a water change just suck up all the debris when siphoning out the water. i normally have to do a minor re-arranging of ripped up plants and so on, but that depends how crazy your axies are.

Nope. A simple siphon (not a gravel vacuum) will not pick up sand if it's a heavier grain (i.e. don't use the fine reptile sand--which isn't for water or good for the filter anyway). I just give my siphon a shake and all the sand drops to the bottom.

What sand did you ask for at that pool store?

As for ideas, look on ebay on some of the tank decorations they have, also I would look for images of freshwater rivers and ponds on the net.

my axies seem to chew up their live plants which is their privilege but i get plastic plants soak them and remove the wire then i ancore them to the filter water return makes like a spray bar and drape like 4 inch sections together sometimes they end up on the bottom but the axies seem to think its my job to drape them up again they look funny when they get them on their nose just dont forget to remove the wire some are too hard so i run thin ribbon through the plastic holes that go over the wire the living plants seem to do better when the axies
have other distractions
Sharn since my temperatures are lower they are so much more active
thanks again

If you want to make the tank more interesting for your axies try adding a pipe for them to hide in. Mine has a drain pipe and she loves to sleep and hide in it. My axie also likes to climb so you could add something for them to climb up.

yes it is pool filter sand, from memory of some of the posts. A few people use that on here. I have sandpit sand, which is a combo of river and dune sand; and quite dark dark colour (which can be a problem when trying to spot our dark wildtypes!) The white leucistics are so easy to spot on this tho! You can also get coloured sand over in the US/UK - have seen it in some of the gallery photos - prob from your aquariums/lfs.
