Help? Milky film over top of tank water!

I wasn't sure whether to post this in the tank forum or not! So I just came here. Anyway! Kind of weird. I woke up this morning and went to say good morning to Toothless and a clear/milky white film was covering the entire top of the tank water! Even with the filter water going. Kind of freaked me out really. So I cleaned it up/took it out and replaced some of the water. Toothless doesn't seem sick/isn't acting abnormally.. So what's up with this?

New tank? This happens to me during the cycling process, I believe it's just bacteria/protein. You can either let it work itself out or lay a piece of paper towel on the waters surface and it will come off when you lift the paper.

It isnt a new tank though, that's whats weird. I've had it since December. I did just switch the filter foam though, so that could be it. Its never done that before though. But hopefully you're right!

It probably is a protein layer - just keep an eye on it. It can be removed as Linus suggested.

Just to let you know, most of the biological filter is in the actual filter, i.e. the foam. When you change the filter media, a lot of people actually put both the new and old in it for a day.

It is just protein though, it wouldn't be there if there was more waterflow.

i have the same problem, it has happened before too! but i have a semi-powerful zoomed turtle filter for my lil 12 gallon tank. my lil axie doesn't seem affected by it, he even goes up for air with it around and doesn't seem to care too much. i figured it would work itself out. i kind of broke it up and it's in the water now, hoping my filter will take care of it. if not, i'll do the paper towel thing which i somehow knew about but forgot to do.
