sudden gill shrinkage as you describe is usually caused by bad water quality or stress.

also, that gravel is unsuitable, chances are that your axie will swallow some unintentionally and this will cause impaction, which can lead to death of your animal. remove it and replace with a thin layer of washed play sand or don't use a substrate at all.

I see you live in KL, is the temperature in the tank stable? ideally it should be below 20 degrees celsius.

edit: I see from the middle picture that your axie seems to be floating, chances are he is already impacted.

i know that my water temperature is too high for an axolotl, the water temperature he is average about 26 celcius, that guy which are floating is eating well, he sometime float and some time at the bottom as usuall, i actually hand feed them and as usual, when they see me back home they will suddenly go at the water surface searching for worm, i do regular water change every week is that can cause the water to be bad for them??? or it is the sign of heat stress?? should i put them in the fridge for a while if that is the sign of heat stress and the fridge question, should i closed the fridge door if i put them in there, can he breath if i closed the door??,and btw, that rock are very large, even it is actually larger than adult axolotl head, if you mean that sand, yeah, i already put it out....heeeee.. i dont really see any sign of stress cause these guy are very active and eating very well, thier body dosent sign any stress accur, im really puzzle.... :dizzy::dizzy:

The temperature is too high. Your axolotl will probably die if you continue to keep it at 26c. You need to put him in the fridge now, but you have to find a long-term way to cool your tank, such as using a chiller.

Even if you feed your axolotl by hand, it can ingest the gravel. Gravel impaction can be deadly.

Excessive activity is a sign of stress. Adult axolotls rarely move around. I see mine in new spots occasionally, but I rarely see him swimming.

A happy axoltol tends to be very lazy during the day, and they become rather active in the evening and at night.

the water temperature is too high, about 21-22 is the hottest you should let your tank become, this could have something to do with the issues you're having.

what is your water chemistry like? ammonia, nitrates, etc?

actually, when i frist buy them at the pet shop, the temperature i see in the petshop also at 26 celsius, that what puzzling me, i being watching them in the petshop for 2month (my hobby is visiting pet shop) and there are no sign of illness there, even in that temperature, maybe i should check for ammonia and for my next month sallary maybe i should buy an chiller.............. i already remove the gravel already and let the tank bare bottom and they eat more confortable...but did i still need to closed the fridge door completely, can they breath in there?????

in your climate a chiller for coldwater species is a must, were I live, I even have trouble sometimes keeping my tank cool in summer, a holiday in the fridge does wonders for axies.

how long has the tank been up and running? is it cycled?

thank you guys,im soo afraid to loose another one.... so did i have to closed the fridge door shut completely?????? that page dosent say anything on the door?? or maybe................... i should used frozen bottled.................. ist good idea????

Yes, close the door. Otherwise all the cool air will dissipate and your fridge will be running on overtime and the temperature won't be stable.

frozen bottles of water help, but only to cool the tank quickly and you'll need lots of them, a few in your tank and lots in the freezer, they will melt within 30 minutes or so.

a chiller is the only reliable option for a tank that warm.

you can achieve a temperature drop of a few degrees by using a fan to blow air across the water's surface, and if your tank has a hood/glass lids, remove them as it traps heat. adding a airstone can help with water circulation and help cool the tank further.

fiuuu... somebody finally answer.... thank you... there are no sign of other illness ecept for that gills, maybe i should try cooling the water in my tank frist for this month with frozen bottle, i make 2 bottle this night and start tomorrow... thanks i really appreciate you guys helping me here finding solution and the caused of the illness... i update to you later... thanks.... (In malay: terima kasih)..

really?? but i may used 1.5 liter bottled water, yeah, tomorow i will go buy fan for that purpose, air stone? maybe i should check that too, ist expensive and lasting??

Even 1.5l bottles of water will melt in a short manner. And you'll have to constantly be rotating fresh frozen bottles into the tank. I would start with about 10 frozen bottles, and change them every hour or hour and a half.

An airstone and a fan will cool your tank a little, but I doubt it will get the water temperature below 23c, which is still too high. Also, air stones and fans are more effective in dry areas versus humid areas. From what I understand about Malaysia, the humidity is very high, and these cooling methods won't be as effective.

oooo... then i should get chiller then... i update you guys later what i do but i defenitly decrease the water temperature to 21 celsius... thanks... :D

Hi,

in my mind, to cool the water with ice bottles is not a goot idea. As Kaysie wrote you will need lots of ice bottles and the frozen bottles will warm up in the tank much faster, than the bottles can freeze.
What are your temps in the night? I think in Malaysia the nights are very waarm, too. So you have to cool down the water temp during the whole night. Or the water warms up and in the morning you begin to cool down the water again. Its a up and down, which stresses your axie more.:(
So, I suggest to put him in the fridge .......and shut the door;).........until you got a chiller.

hi..

the water temperature in malaysia is preety constant, it almost the same during night or day.. it constantly 26 celsius... i have these guy for 2 month already... but what puzzel me these guy is growing... and i should get these chiller...

i already keep these guys in regerigerator already, and they are in good shape, i no longer keep them in aquarium anymore, i read these article in the caudata which said i can keep them in there forever if i want to, so these weekend i will go back to my home town in penang to get the chiller, in my home at s.alam the normal temperature is about 26, i wonder why this place are colder, maybe i can get some fan to my aquarium maybe it can decrease to 22 celsius... :)

i already move my tank to shaded place, but very minimal wind, but i added 1 large aquarium fan i bhought last week.. the temperature is amazinglly drop to 25-24.5 celsius and my axies dosent floating anymore, no more skin being shaded from their skin im soo glad, i know its high for an axies, but for now, this is the only things i can do for them and if i see some sickness behavior, i just put them in the fridge and give some vitamins during their vacation in the fridge just to give time to recover...

pardon me, but that´s not a good idea. The temperature is way too high and you put your axies life on the line. You need a chiller to cool the temp down. That´s the only way. Axies feel best and healthy at temps <20°C.

Tina

these new picture of them, seem no skin shedding occur anymore.... no more floating on the water.... :singing:
