looked in on the little guys yesterday and one of them has got a big ball of what looks like fluf just before the end of his tail.

what could this be and how can i cure it?

It could be a mycosis. Which is the temp ?
If little guys has metamorphosed, put them in a clean tank, containing only wet paper towel on the bottom. If they are instead in the water, put into a product used for fish against mycosis (HALF DOSE).
Let us know.

the temp was 18c. i put in a new tank and put in some medication, but it died the other day. the others seem perfectly normal.

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
