Help! My Tiger Salamander is ill!

A Sad Day

Today we had to put Seadog to rest. The vet used gas to put him to sleep and now he is not suffering anymore. I'm going to miss his cute little face.

We were surprised that he took a turn for the worse because his walking had improved, with both legs moving fine- and he was very active. The oral calcium gluconate actually even brought his calcium levels back to normal (from 5.3 to 8.3) and the vet noted improvement in his condition. Note: I used no UVA or UVB light at all during this improvement.

What we could not fix was a skin condition that left his back bloody (vasculitis?). I think the skin condition was brought on when I used the topical calcium gluconate on his back and the UVB light in the past. The vet also suspected that he might have had cancer; he also had liver disease which we were treating with oral medication. This morning we just knew it was time. He had lost 40 % of his body weight and wasn't eating on his own. This morning he kept opening his mouth. It has been one year since all this happened.

From all this I have learned that topical medication and UVB light actually did more harm than good in my case- even though I thought it was great at first. I still think had I not tried those methods that he was losing weight from another malady. I also learned that chicken & veggie baby food is a great way to deliver medicine through a syringe and he was less likely to throw up his meds if they were in a paste with the baby food. Most of all I learned that even the smallest creatures can leave a hole in your heart when they are gone.

Re: A Sad Day

I'm so very sorry you lost your pal today. Seadog sounds like he had an amazing long life and you took such good care of him, as is detailed in your posts. Your information will be so helpful to others who are seeing such symptoms in their own newts. It will be hard that he's gone, but hopefully years of memories will help in time. Thank you for sharing.

Very informative thread maybe he can help others . R.I.P seadog

Thank you both for the kind words and thank you for reading my posts- I hope that some of this information will help as I know it is very difficult to deal with these kinds of illnesses. I'm missing him already- our house seems empty without him- but we do take solace in knowing that he had a long life full of digging, swimming, and eating like crazy. ?
