Oh my, how strange. 8 years old? I know as some get older they develop spots. Mine is getting some as she ages but like, how suddenly did this color change occur? Is he still eating and asking fine?

I had to transport her to small black container doing water changes daily, today Iā€™m gonna start with salt bath for 10 mins. I was thinking itā€™s final infection. Sheā€™s getting more and more white on her head towards all her body. She seems fine, eating, greeting me in the morning. Sheā€™s 8 years old never had any problems like this before. Recently Iā€™ve bought her new tank as other one broke.
Did everything the same.
But bought her some aquarium live plants.
She was eating them. My other axolotls had them as well they eat it all but never gained any white spots .... only her.

Any updates? Salt baths are very harsh on them, id avoid them until certain it's any sort of infection.

If you don't notice any change in behavior, eating, etc, be calm! Watch if the skin has any sort of bubbles, flakes, more slime, is falling off and so on.
If it's only the color change, I've seem a lot of older axolotl turning white, something like VITILIGO. It's not dangerous and common.
Cheers!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if youā€™re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isnā€™t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
