I came home to my lotl missing part of the tip of its tail is missing.. (to be sexed). My concern is that it’s from its tank mate but haven’t seen any aggression.. any help or ideas would be extremely helpful and appreciated..
They were very mistreated when we first got them, over 40 little baby’s all biting at eachother in a not even 10 gallon tank, the one we think did the biting had a leg missing when we got her. I will definitely separate them until he’s healed and try feeding less but more frequently. I appreciate it very much!I had a similar situation with my two newest girls Tyra and Tula, when I took them off their previous owner. Depending on your axolotls, hopefully something I have to say may help?
The girls came from a home where they were getting fed maybe a few worms up to twice a week. Tyra would pick on Tula and get snappy whenever she got hungry, which is how Tula got her tail injury prior to me picking them up (only slightly more than your photo). Having had them a few months now, those two in particular prefer being fed smaller but far more often, and has definitely stopped any nipping. They get along perfectly fine now - I don't know how your feeding schedule is, but maybe you could try that in case you've simply missed an axie being sneaky?
Besides that, can you rule out any tank decorations somehow being the cause of it? Anything that could catch something if an axolotl was being particularly silly?
I had to take rocks out that were being used as a hide a while back, when my albino kept knocking on it and grazing her head. She's the derpy one out of the trio and the rocks weren't even sharp, just pretty ridged in places.
In the meantime, you could maybe stick some almond leaves in the tank whilst your axolotl is healing and keep a close eye on them. If it turns out their tank mate has been getting nippy afterall - even if you feed them more often - you could separate them until the tail's healed, since it tends to be weaker tissue until it's really settled in.
seperate the injured one from the other in a clear tank with nothing for the tail to be hurt even worse and let the tail heal and possibly regrow and if it starts to turn red and looks like it has an infection take he/she to an exotic pet veterinarian.
hope he/she feels better
