Illness/Sickness: HELP - Rescued Axie from pet shop with Nitrates OFF THE CHART!

You could try wax worms, not as a staple but just for something to get him to eat, none of mine could resist them.

I'm in Australia & cannot find wax worms here anywhere nor anyone who can tell me what else they might be called :-/

Does anyone know if they are available in Australia & where do I find them?

Thanks again :)
(Sorry if you're all sick of reading my posts already - it never ends! )

Ah ok,maybe they're called moth worms or something? Hopefully someone will be able to tell you!

Ah, it could be that they're seen as an invasive species over there then.
You could try a bit of prawn chopped up?

Posting cause I want to follow this little guys progress. Bless you for saving him and doing all you can. It warms my heart to know there are still great people in this world.

You may not save the world but you saved that Axies world.

Poor little guy wasn't good this morning.

I peeked in a couple of times & thought he was resting - when his position didn't change I looked closely & all his feet & legs were tucked backwards. I gently touched him with a chopstick & he was stiff & didn't move at all :( I tried gently touching behind his legs & eventually he took a couple of steps - it's like he's exhausted - so I think he needs the fridge. I'll keep him there at least a week as his bottom seems swollen & I wouldn't be surprised if the gravel he was on is also a factor.

So for now he's just chilling - literally!
I worked out how to adjust the fridge so I'm sure I can keep him at a constant temp for a while.

I got the almond leaves & Aloe Vera water conditioner & will be prepping some water with them.

QUESTIONS:

Can I / Should I put a leaf in the tub with him until the bucket of water with the leaves & Aloe ages 48hrs?

Should I continue with the black tea while he's in the fridge? Will it be ok to mix the tea / almond leaf / Aloe or is that likely to be too much?

Thanks again.

Here's pics of poor Boo looking very lethargic just before being fridged this morning :( keep those fingers crossed!

:'( I failed him - SpookyBoo passed away today - sadly I think his last few steps before he went into the fridge were his last :(

I've called & spoken to the vet (axolotl specialist) regarding a post mortem on the little guy - I'd like to know what killed him (cost of $300 - I'll pay) & then I'll contact the RSPCA with a fully documented complaint.

I'm so angry! I don't care if every pet / fish shop ends up hating me! - I'm going to get serious & print out care sheets I'll laminate a master copy for each shop & I'll put a copy of the relevant laws protecting animals in there care on the other side highlighting in bold the law! From there they'll be hand delivered to all the shops (sent to larger companies management with a firm letter)
I'll check their axies conditions - including water parameters if I bloody have to! I'll document & make formal complaints in writing with copies forwarded to RSPCA every time!

I'm know I'm only new to having axolotls - but I'm tired of hearing about them suffering because the people who sell them (retailers not breeders) don't care enough to make sure they give the correct information! It's like selling a puppy & telling people to feed it peanuts & it's ok to sleep on a pile of broken glass - people would go nuts if some moron was dishing out that info!

Enough is Enough

RIP SpookyBoo - sorry :(

So sorry to hear this Nikki. You did your absolute best, I'll be doing the same with some help from friends. They're such misunderstood creatures, everyone says 'ooh a fish with legs, let's put it on gravel in a fish bowl' :( RIP SpookyBoo

Nikki, you didn't fail him at all, you did so much to try and help him get better.

I think you should be really proud of what you did for the little guy. I'm sure that won't make it any easier though. I would love to get a copy of your care sheet once you've completed it and hand it around to some of the hopeless pet stores in my region too. RIP - SpookyBoo

Aww, you did your best. I'm sure he loved you for what you did for him. :(

Thanks for the kind words. He was definitely loved :) even by my husband who has come around to loving my 'lizards' as he calls them.
He's always said he doesn't like the albino / white ones & never wanted me to get one. But last night he was sad too & said he wished Spooky had made a recovery & joined our axolotl clan.

Raising healthy happy pets is always our priority & it will never get easier to see how people treat animals like they were a disposable commodity.

Spooky will leave his mark - very soon there will be an even bigger movement against pet shops selling all animals. Previously the focus has been on selling dogs & cats - I'm thinking the legislation needs to go further. Perhaps retailers need specific species certifications for each animal they sell & all staff must be knowledgable & have access to accurate care information to be able to sell axolotls & even goldfish! I'll be speaking with a few people today at RSPCA & a politician or ten regarding legislation.

Go for it Nikki!

(and remind me never to get on your bad side!)

My condolences Nikki, you did your best and I think you know how much happier SpookyBoo was - you'll forever have that photo of him smiling at you. You definitely extended his life and made his last few days much more pleasant, and looking at that photo, he knows it was you who was his little rescue angel.

I have officially reported the shop to the RSPCA - I've kept the little one Boo in the freezer (due to vet availability at time of death & being left in fridge overnight - a post mortem may not have been able to ascertain all possible causes of death) I've suggested to the RSPCA that they X-ray Boo to see if gravel was a possible cause - I spent over an hour talking to the RSPCA & explained that it isn't just this shop letting axolotls down & that I was going to door knock every shop in the Sydney area (currently working out how many pet shops exist in this state) with appropriate care sheets one side & their legal obligations to the animals in their care on the reverse (nothing like a gentle reminder of the law! ;) ), I will gladly laminate & distribute these sheets either personally or by mail.

As for legislation changes - it's been a hot topic for a while in my state NSW - but now I want to make sure it covers aquatics & amphibians too! I never thought there'd come a day that I'd be campaigning & petitioning for the rights of axolotls or even a goldfish. But every pet deserves to be treated well & kept in healthy conditions, especially when in the possession of retailers.

I'll let you know what comes of the RSPCA complaint.

Cheers.

In my opinion, for as long as shops don't know how to keep these wonderful creatures... only breeders should be allowed to sell them.

I'm going to a shop this afternoon that sells axos in awful conditions, will smuggle along my camera and snap some shots and report it.

Something should really be done about this.

We do have an issue with the Axolotl supplier here in Australia. The axies arrive in the pet shops in one bag, sometimes with eight adults in it. Only one pet shop that I visit refuses to purchase from them due to their condition and lack of appetite. I bought my adults from pet shops, probably the same supplier, and it took a while to even get them eating well. I am happy to start making some noise in Australia if anyone else wants to join me. Good on you Nikki for rescuing the little guy, you're doing a great job, I bet he loves you already.
