Hello all!

I went away for a few days over the weekend and my axolotl was perfectly healthy! I came back today and he looked dead. I thought he had first been caught under the pot that is his home..but when I moved it, he moved (I think I might have slightly frightened him). That's when I noticed that it looks like his skin is peeling. It was not like that when I left. I am very worried that he is not going to survive this. I contacted the student who is in charge of caring for them and he suggested a salt bath, which I am currently doing. I just wanted to know if anyone else has had this problem at all. If so, what did you do to help your axie?

It looks like a fungus, so a salt bath is a good place to start. Cool, clean, dechlorinated water changed every day should be his home until he feels better. Keep a bucket of dechlorinated water out and put him in a container with the water, change it every day. I don't know if you should do salt baths every day or not, I've only done (and am currently doing) tea baths, so I don't know if there's a difference in treatment.

Thanks for your input. I just found this tonight and my professor, who is somewhat of an expert on axies, is out on vacation right now. So I asked the student in charge what to do and he said a salt bath but I just wanted another axie owners opinion. Hopefully Guillermo will be doing better in a few days.

Is that on top of the skin?? from the pics it looks like it's just a hole into his insides!! D:

It was the top portion of his skin. Sadly, he didn't make it through the night:(

I'm very sorry for your loss :( May he swim under the rainbow bridge.

I'm sorry for your loss, poor thing. May he rest in peace.

Do you have any other inhabitants in the tank? Looks like he was eaten by something.

No, at the time this happened he was the only animal in the tank. I had some feeder fish in there about a week prior so I'm wondering if they might have been infected and then when he ate them, got infected. I'm extremely sad that I lost him but luckily my college had a few left so I now have a new baby lotl.
