I am in NY and because of the storm I was totally unprepared for the hatching of 300 axolotl and two dozen danubs.
I have a forty gallon low tank, which is full of plants and snails but has not been used for three months. i tested the water and it was fine. I put in six axolotls (five wild and one golden) on Firday at 3 PM. They were doing fine (i could not see all of them but they were alive) and were alive Saturday afternoon at around 2 PM. Then at around 6 PM all but hte golden, larve were dead. They hatched noon friday. I checked the tank parameters and it was fine. Howver, I looked under a high power microscope and all the newts had these rod like creatures congregating around them. I witnessed the death of the last axolotl at 6 PM. It was fine at 5:45 and at 6 was dead. Any ideas/ The golden was removed from the tank and placed in fresh water and is still alive.
Any ideas?
The rest of the hatched are still in the hatching tank and I see no fatalities.
