Help!

My wooper is two years old. He had signs of a little fungus (his tank temp rose) and i am trying to prevent it from getting worse. I have given him many salt baths before, but now something new is happening. He had pooped himself the other day, and got it all in his gills while being treated in the refridge. I probobly shouldnt have, but i touched his gills and now this white stuff is attached to all his gills. They look like he was dipped in frosting, and i am really worried as this has never happened before. Anyone seen this?? It doesn't look like normal fungus.

Oh dear. I tried looking for something similar in the forums and all I came up with is that the gills can turn white and shrink/fall off when the water quality is bad. Is the black stuff tangled up in his gills poop or dead tissue, can you tell?

I'm assuming you're still fridging/salt-bathing? Does he seem to be in any distress or do his gills just look awful? And is he in his own little container getting daily water changes or something? Because that probably can't hurt.

Thanks for trying to help! We do a water change every couple of days, but i should test the quality while he is not in the tank. He is getting water changes daily while being refridgerated in his big Tupperware tub, and I am pretty sure the black stuff is poop. When his accident happened (hours after he started being refrigerated) he only had a little spot of fungas so i am sure its poop. Like I said, he has been refrigerated many times due to us not watching his tank temp properly , but his feces have never been stuck in the gills before like this. Poor guy. He seems to be in distressed with the salt water, he gets the hiccups or opens his mouth like he is trying to breath, but i know they use their gills to breath so i am thinking the white stuff is killing them. He is a tough guy, and been through more than an axolotl should. I am hoping he will get through this because i dont know of any other treatment to get him.

Not wanting to be negative, but if you are not normally able to keep him cool enough in his tank perhaps you need a pet that copes with warmer water. You should not have to put yourself through the guilt or the axolotl through the suffering. Life's too short. I have no trouble keeping mine cool as there is an ideal spot for their tank on my property, so I'm lucky.

I'm just wondering whether the salt is maybe a little too strong ? I know that prolonged salt bathing can damage gills as they are so fragile, maybe it's that ?

So now its been 8 days. I haven't done any salt baths lately and the gills still look the same. I guess no one has seen this happen before?! In a couple more days if no improvement is made i will put her back in the tank. She needs to eat and doesn't unless she is in the tank.

Turns out it was a cold water fungus! Did some research on the phone (can't remember the site). Beware! There are two kinds of fungus! I did not know this and am glad to report that wooper's gills are back to their normal color, red! :happy:
