I got 2 axolotls a few days ago. they were perfectly healthy and now their gills are shrinking!! i think they are just stressed due to water flow but i wanna be sure. (i’m fixing that problem today) they haven’t eaten since i got them either. i tried feeding pellets but they won’t eat them. there tails are curved so is it just stress or any other problems?!

You are using strips which are highly inaccurate

I am betting you have an uncycled tank as your nitrite should be 0

I would tub with cold clean prime treated water until you can sort out the tank. Change the water every 12-24 hours.

You need a liquid test kit for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate in order to sort out the tank properly.

0.3. i put in some tabs that kills ammonia and i’m hoping it works

they are doing better today. they are less stressed and the one ate a few pellets. the other one won’t eat pellets so i’m trying earth worms. have any idea why the one won’t eat? *update* it ate half of a night crawler.
as of today water is:
nitrate: 5
nitrite: 0
hardness: hard
PH: 7.8
ammonia: 0.3
....
i will be getting a liquid test kit once my horse bills are payed off. (will be payed off in 3 days) i also am currently treating the water for ammonia and all the icky stuff i don’t need.
