Herp VETs

John,

I have a request from one of the regulars in axolotl help. I think that a section similar to the testemonials section the Donors forum might be very useful. This ladies axie got into a bit of a state and eventually died. But she did get help from a vet and found him useful. If possible could we enter a new list/main topic section under the "Help and Basic Health Care Section". I was thinking of something very basic that simply put the address of the vet, No personal comments, and the providers handle:

Mik/John or anyone of the moderators..

Can we have a place where people can list the names of vets that they have used and have found helpful. I had a bit of a hard time finding one near me and i think this mite help. I would like to recommend the vet i used as he knew what a axolotl was and actually knew how to help.

that would be really helpful - i have a friend who's a vet nurse so i'll ask her what's the best way of finding out where the Herp vets can be found

Cheers Mik for putting my idea up.

I think this would help out alot. I feel that Vets out there that are able to help arnt known..

Or they dont know about Caudates in detail. Not saying that they dont know anything but they have to specialise in these areas.

Does anyone else have a view on this..?

Good idea Mikki,

I know of six Veterinary Practices around the country that are proficient in Herp medicine.

It was brought up in chat that it'd be helpful if there was a directory service of sorts for vets with herp/caudate experience. I think it'd be extremely helpful, especially for people who may not know of any herp/caudate specific practices/vets in their areas.

You can check the amphibian and reptile vet webpage for vets close to you that specialize in these animals (see http://www.arav.org/Directory.htm )

However, all you need is a vet that is either willing to consult (with vets at Zoos is a good start or who is willing to work with you, if you have the proper informtion. I have done both and have had excellant results).

Thanks for info Ed, saved your text to a word file on my pc for future reference.

Mike credit goes to Kim for the idea. However, if you could send me those addys I will keep and be able to forward to others looking for professional help in meantime.

Since the sites mentioned here are clearly going to be very useful, if non-obvious, to many of us here, would it be possible to place them on the Caudata Culture links page?

John? Care to add them?

The links do appear in the FAQs on Caudata Culture.

Unimaginative as I am, I looked on the Links page for links first

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
