Herping in Ontario

So its October. I am guessing all the salamanders are burrowing down to hibernate till spring? What are your guy's richest specimen locations in Ontario? I went up to Bancroft and I found a million of redback salamanders and even one yellow spotted salamander. of course garter snakes and ribbon snakes along with red bellied snakes! I also found an abundance of brilliant colored fungus species. Can't wait to go back.

It's against site policy and just generally a bad idea to publicly advertise detailed locality information. That just invites overuse or abuse of habitats and their populations.

As of a week ago, I was able to find a bunch of long-toed salamanders, although they were mostly on their way into the talus for the winter. By next Saturday though, that location is likely to have a thin layer of wet snow among the dead leaves and remaining flowers. Meanwhile, southern Ontario hits 25C. The latest record of an active rattlesnake I know of in Alberta is November, near the Montana and Saskatchewan borders. You likely have a few weeks of herping in good sites in Ontario still.

I'd love to go herping sometime. I've tried it on my own with very little success.
