Looks to me like a type of Plethodon. If you go to Caudate Culture website(you can find it on the top right hand drop down menu at the page), you can take a look at all the pictures posted and decide for yourself.

Kay.

Kay is right...though i would say it looks alot like a gray phase red-backed salamander. If it is their really common up here in the northeast. Your biggest issue will be feeding it because it requires very small prey. You can raise fruit flies or collect leaf litter for springtails etc.. Good luck they've always been a favorite of mine since i was a kid.

I'd put my money on Northern slimy Salamander or even a Wehrle's with that flecking. Just can't decide which head shape matches better but it's most likely one of those two.

How popular are fruit flies as feeders for newts? Do people buy cultures or culture their own?

It all depends on how much you want to spend and how dedicated you are to starting your own colonies. Saurian enterprises and black jungle are to good sources to buy from. Springtails would also work and cutting up small worms.

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
