Hi everyone!
I'm new to the world of axolotls. My two young and myself got interested in when we discovered an axolotl puppet at Christmas time. From then on we were hooked on axolotls.
When we found out we could get them in Canada, I started doing my research on how we could get one or two for a pet. I was able to make contact with a nice lady in Alberta who was selling eggs. I thought I would go that route to show my daughters the whole growing process. But at the time I was not ready for the eggs because i was going to be moving in a few months and I wasn't sure if I could produce enough live food for the babies.
I first attempted to start a daphnia culture. I had one going pretty good then it crashed just a week ago.
As I was saying I was going to try and hatch some eggs but the lady from Alberta wasn't going to try and produce eggs until June. I was going to wait when I saw an ad for some juvenile axolotls in Vancouver. I ended purchasing two leucistic one that were 2.5 months old and about 4cm long. I didn't figure it at the time but this was more of a rescue than a purchase. When I got my axolotls to my sister's house to look at them I notice that the axolotls had little fleshy stubs where the legs should be. I thought they were growing their legs. Then I read that they grow their front legs first then the back one. I thought this is odd to have bigger back stubs and little to no front legs. That's when I figured the axolotl's legs were probably bitten off by the other axolotls. The woman had about two bins of 30-40 axolotls all together.
It's been 4 days with my little guys or girls. They are eating some of the bloodworms but not much. They are pooping so I guess it's good. I sound like a dad with new born twins! I currently have them in a 2.5 gallon tank partially filled at a temperature of 67°F or 18°C. I do a 80% water change and put a fan on once in awhile to get a little water movement to oxygenate the water. I plan to move them to a 10 gallon tank so I can get a filter going in the water then a larger tank after that like a 30 or 40 gallon.
That's my reason for joining!
