I hatched an axolotl a few months ago. Gave the rest to an aquarium because I couldn't find food for them—hopefully they survived—one person I called said they'll eat each other so it'll be fine but that sounded F-ed up.
But I finally found a hatching set, and so the sole axolotl I kept managed to survive with no food until I could hatch him some BBS. And I have been painstakingly doing so multiple times a week since. The separating the nauplii from the shells is the worst part as it's so time consuming and painstakingly tedious, but hopefully I can build something to help separate themselves perhaps out of plastic and hot glue.

I came here because I have a lot of questions I couldn't find answers to online or elsewhere. This whole thing has been a guessing game, and I don't want to accidentally kill the axolotl but to do that I have to figuring out how much BBS he needs both now and at later stages, and how often (and also how to maintain the steady supply of BBS in the first place). But most of all I need to learn how to efficiently separate the BBS from their shells!!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
