Hi,

Just bought a beautiful 10 month old axie a few days ago so joined the forum.
I was hoping to breed in the future and would like help sexing my axie so I can buy the opposite gender. Below is a picture hopefully. Is it too early to tell yet?

Many thanks

Hi and welcome to the forum! Your Axie looks like a male however from that angle it is hard to tell. He looks Very small and thin for 10 months. That gravel, it looks small but GET IT OUT OF THERE!!! If your Axie swallows it then it could KILL him. What are you feeding him? Try waxworms to fatten him up. Other then that he looks very cute and has a very nice colour!

Thanks very much, I will try and get a few more pics. He/She is about 6inches and actually looks quite fat to me. I feed Him/Her on one earthworm a day cut in half. The gravel is slightly bigger than sand but I hand feed my axie and our fish store specialist said they normally don't eat the gravel, if hand fed. What do you think?

And thanks for the reply :)

Maybe it was the angle of the picture that made him (or her) look thin, a lot of the time fish shops don't know much about Axies, and some of them will just try and sell you things. If you need to know something that is important (e.g illness) I would post on here. What and when your feeding your Axie is good. However I would recommend going bare bottom or sand, but sand can also be a problem unless hand feeding or a feeding bowl/jar is used.

Ok will do, and great thanks. Luckily my local fish shop, the only one I know of that keeps axies in Northern Ireland has been keeping them for decades and does actually know how to look after them, which can't be said for some other shops.
But ofc I will always post here first :D
Many thanks, and I will post a few more pics

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
