Hello! I am from Central Virginia. I currently have one axolotl, he is a Lucy and he is called Kirby. He has a 20 gallon long tank and eats live blackworms. He is my first ever axolotl as they just became legal to own here in VA on August 1st! I did tons of research before I purchased him, and made sure his tank was fully cycled. I joined this forum in hopes of learning from more experienced keepers! I also enjoy fishkeeping and have a 55 gallon tropical community tank and koi pond in the yard.

Hi welcome to the forum 😁

I joined for the same reasons as yourself, to learn from experienced keepers.

I have 2 axolotls and they are so cool 😎

Thought I’d share a photo of Kirby, cause why not?

Really cute 😉

Like your setup
Thanks! He‘s only 3 and a half inches, so I was nervous to put him on sand, but he’s been doing well especially with his little feeding bowl

Welcome from northern VA! 😊 He’s sooo cute!!! I’ve had mine (Falkor) for over 6 years now...they grow up so fast!

Thanks! Ah Falkor is gorgeous!!!
Thank you!!! I think he might be a bit big, but, he’s old and he has food in the tank...I can’t come between a man and his tummy. 😄 I wish you all the best with your little one! 💖

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
