Home made pottery for tanks

Could I make my own pottery for in newts cages? I would fire it in a kiln. Would glazing it be safe?

This is something I've also wondered about, but haven't tried (yet). I think that if both the clay and the glaze were food-safe, they should be newt-safe.

An acquaintance of mine makes his own hides for his aquarium. It works out wonderfully because he can tailor the caves to exactly what he wants; e.g., with little cups on the side for holding plants. I should think that making your own pottery is even safer than using store-bought pots, etc., because you know exactly what is in the finished product.

Yes, by all means do it! I am a firm advocate of making everything you can yourself.

Just be careful of the glazes which contain metals harmful to aquarium life. Just like with paint, greens and blues can be problematic as they can contain copper, cobalt, and other stranger stuff.
It is good to read the pigmentation ingredients list on the package.


I have always wanted to try making terracotta filters for my tanks. (That fired unglazed stuff has real possibilities for rearing tank filtration I think.)
