How active should they be?

I have a baby axolotl that hatched last week. (I brought two extra embryos home from my developmental biology lab.)

How active should he be? He doesn't seem to dart around much, just kinda hangs out towards the top or the bottom of the bowl. This seems strange to me 'cause when I've had fish, they swim around a bit more.

Also, for right now I have him in a glass jar since he's pretty small. As he gets bigger I'll get a tank set up, but is the jar okay for now? I've been doing partial water changes with a turkey baster every so often.

it depends how big he and the jar are i suppose, make sure you have a hidey hole in there for him. i was going to ask if it was normal for mine to be unusally active, hes the smaller of my three (about 12cm) and he spends about 80% swimming around but the older ones just sit there. maybe its just his personality??

he's about 1 cm right now...tiny compared to yours

I probably should get him something to hide in...he hid behind the membrane he'd hatched out of, til I took it out of the jar.

HA cute, wow he is tiny, does he even have legs yet? if the jars big enough get one of those teeny tiny ceramic pots for him, some one on here has them in there tank too, in the axie gallery. that should do him fine or a plant or stone of something haha

Your little axolotl sounds perfectly normal Miriam. The only time they really move around is to hunt food. Are you hatching it brine shrimp or feeding it daphnia?

Glad to hear it sounds like mine is normal.
I got some freshly-hatched brine shrimp from a man who runs a hatchery, and I'm hoping that I'll be successful in getting my own brine shrimp to hatch soon.

Hi Guys,
Sorry to change the subject, my girlfriend and i have 4 axolotyls, 1 of them (an albino) has just laid hundreds of eggs. We have a four foot tank which we have divided, about 1/3 for the eggs and 2/3's for the 4 adults.
Does anyone know what we have to do know to ensure the eggs hatch and we get babies???
How long does it take for the eggs to hatch???
I read that you guys feed them hatched brine shrimp and Daphnia, is this all they need to eat?
And one last question how big are the babies when they hatch?
Thankyou for you help and advise!!

ummm from what ive read id take those eggs out cuz if some get a infection they could spread to the other eggs and wipe them all out, just have to make sure the containers are ariated so each egg can get some air. once they hatch and start to grow seperate the sizes cuz the big ones will eat the little ones (ewwwww)haha any more questions just ask people on here are glad to help!

ezy, I'm not sure how old the eggs were when I got them, but it probably took two weeks or more for them to hatch.

mine was about 1cm when it hatched. the eggs are clear so you can watch the babies develop within the egg.

I've been feeding mine newly-hatched brine shrimp, which seems to be working. The will only eat live food because they don't have a good enough sense of smell to be able to find food--their instinct to lunge at small, darting objects like baby brine shrimp is the only thing that'll make them eat.

Ok thankyou! All three of you, you have all been a great help!

I will have a look at the website, and seperate the eggs. I cant wait to see the stages the little guys go thru.

Thankyou again!
