How deep should substrate be?

I was just wondering how many pounds should I get fora 20 gallon long? Also how deep should it be?

It depends on what type of aquascaping you want to do in your tank. Are you planning to make different multiple levels or a plateau? A good rule of thumb to start, for just covering the bottom of a tank is 1 lb per gallon. I recently bought a 50 lb bag of sand for my 50 gallon tank. It had a foot print of 36" x 18" and I had about 0.75-1" thickness of sand with a little raised area in the corner.
