How did you get yours?
Hi, I was just curious as to how everyone got their first, or current Axolotl? We got ours who is a wild type from a kiosk at the mall where he/ she was marketed as a baby dinosaur. We have a special needs 3 year old who loves Dino's and I thought, hey what the hell it's like a fish right? WRONG! We have had " fluffy" for about a month and from this site learned how to care for it. He is in a 10 gal tank with a charcoal filter, plant hidey holes, large river rock bottom, small air pump and seems so happy. My husband thought it was a little odd we got something so exotic from a mall kiosk, so I want to ask where did you get your little friends? By the way, we are so glad we got him! (( always looking for pointers to make his life happier though so feel free to give some))

I got my Axolotl, Zion, from a breeder here on the site. He was shipped to me in the mail.

A few quick tips for your little friend based on what I didn't see in your post:
-read up on Aquarium cycling and test your water for ammonia/nitrites/nitrates regularly
-your lotl needs to be kept cool - room temp is too warm. Keep him around 60-64 degrees F (16-20c)

I got Carlos from the petshop - he was new and hadn't been affected by the water quality/gravel so I bought him right away. The others had no gill filaments, deadly skinny and bumpy.

Pablo and Pedro are siblings and I got them from another axolotl keeper who accidentally bred. He listed it off gumtree, which is a site people use to advertise local sales. So we drove about 15 minutes to go get them both and they were SO tiny!

I haven't got mine yet but my tank has just cycled so I will most likely be picking them up in one week's time (I would love to get them in the next couple of days but I have a busy week ahead of me and I also have to get the nitrate down to a safe level as it is quite high at the moment). I will be getting them from shop locally that specialises in reptiles and amphibians. They do keep their axolotls on gravel (hopefully one day they will change it to sand or bare bottom) but they all look very healthy, none missing limbs or gills, no obvious injuries and all look nice and plump, fluffy gills. In fact despite them being on gravel, they are the healthiest looking axolotls I have seen locally in a shop. :D.

A friend of me had little ones and I got 5 from her :)

I got my first ones from 2 pet shops, but knowing what I know now I will not go back to one of them. I sell my babies through the good pet shop (aquarium specialist) and through private sales, but if I buy another one I will probably go to a breeder or take in a rescue.

Well, I got my two from a pet shop, the pet shop where they were actually didn't have too bad of conditions.

I got my two off Trade Me, sort of like ebay, but for NZ (and in some cases Australia) and less range

I got my two axolotls from a breeder on this site. I saw an axolotl on a tv series I was watching on Netflix and decided to see what kind of creature it was and instantly decided I had to have one when I had done all the research on them. My husband said NO but I got my way finally. :D I couldn't find any pet stores locally that sold them. Most had never heard of them.

I got most of mine from a private breeder and then one from a lfs. The only reason I bought the other one was he looked healthy, was kept on fine sand but is a beautiful dark wildtype with shorter gills than my wildtypes.

I got mine from a random guy off of internet buy/sell site for people in canada (kijiji). I saw a picture of one, and did the research on it, and figured, i had to have one...or 2.

I got mine from a man we know who raised them from eggs. My husband knew I always wanted a lotl and had set a tank up one weekend. He came back from work a few days later with a tub and inside was my little axie.

Was watching animal videos on Youtube and came across one, fell in love instantly. Bought all 5 of mine from two different breeders on Ebay. The 4 wilds I got were cheap but I paid alot for Ripley, hadn't found this site till after I had all 5.

I got mine after seeing a craigslist add for larvae. I didn't even know what they were till I googled them!

I bought two hatchlings for $15 and came with a bottle of brine shrimp eggs.

I have had them for almost a month now. They eat well, I have the brine hatching down pretty good. I am feeding them every day.

Their names are Hortense and Chewie! hahaha

They appear to have front legs, but no back ones. The guy I got them from said they were about 1.5 months old when I got them. So they should be almost 2.5 months old now.. From the pictures I'm seeing, I think they should be a little further in their growth stage by two months. no?? They are about an inch long now.. Maybe I'm just impatient! haha

Still have a lot of reading to do.

Ariel1223... can you add a picture of your axolotl? Alarm bells are ringing here as animals sold in malls as baby dinosaurs turn out to be tiger salamander larvae :/

Anyway... as a very small child I saw axolotl sold in my local pet shop, and fell in love with them. Decades later I realised I could pursue my dream to owning some so I put a wanted add up on a group and a lovely lady responded 7 years ago I brought my Jeffrey and his partner home. They rewarded me with eggs and I now keep him, plus one of his offspring plus another old guy. These were my first amphibians ( as an adult) and I fell for their charms, I now have become a slight caudate addict

I would love to post fluffy picture however I can't seem to figure out how to do that on my iPad . Suggestions for the less than computer genius ?

I got my luesistic, Mixi at the end of May 2013. WOW, almost a year now! I purchased her from my local pet shop. I was in there, as I frequently am, saw a tank with three or four little, 3in axies in it. I went home, googled all about axolotls, persuaded my boyfriend to say yes, fought back and fourth with myself on weather or not I felt up to the task that owning and loving a lotl would be, the next morning I was was all for it! I jumped in the car and went and picked my little luecy, girl up! It was love at fist site! she is a whopping 9 and 1/2in long now, and fat as can be! Thursday I will be getting another, it will be just as tiny as she was when I got her, I have its tank cycling now, I am soooo excited, I'm thinking its name will be Mingus...but that is still up for debate!

I have 3 right now. 2 melanoids and a leucestic. I got them from a really good local breeder after talking with her through our local tropical fish page. I originally saw one about a year ago in a lfs. I did alot of research and when i was ready to get one they didn't have any. Wasn't until I got talking with the breeder that i was able to get them. I love them so entertaining and each one has thier own personalty.

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
