I was wondering how I change my baby axolotls cage. They are newborns and I have around 30. Its a tank with no filter. I installed an air pump though to get oxygen through. And yes I did not put it on high. So how would I clean it? Thanks, Aristole ;)

I have a separate container that has aged dechlorinated water kept out overnight so it's the same temp. I net out the babies in a fine net and place them in. I rinse and wipe down the old tank and refill. Plastic containers are easiest

Yep, move the babies to a clean tub - easiest way to do it.

So putting them in completely new water doesn't shock them too much? How often do you do this?

It shouldn't be new assuming your tap doesn't change from day to day. Babies are sensitive to ammonia and nitrite more so than adults. Leaving the water out overnight ensures that the water they are entering is the same temp. I use floating plants to help maintain the water but since I don't have a large tank to house them I change the water daily which most members here recommend. It's easy if you get into a good routine. So I feed in the morning wait an hour or until I see a bunch of orange bellies then switch them into the new water while dumping out the old and wiping the container. I full back up the now clean container add dechlorinater then leave it until the next morning.

Great, thanks that helps a lot.

Ok. Thank you everyone who replied

I'm following a few of these baby threads as well, and my question is - at what age should you separate them?

Mine are only a few days old so I have them all in the same tank at the moment. I kinda figure they're too little to eat each other anyway.

And on the feeding - do you recommend only feeding once a day?

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
