Hi!

We just moved our axolotl tank into a new, cooler room as the oncoming Summer here in Mexico was starting to heat up the water a bit too much. The new room is perfect, cool and dark and we've kept the same water in the tank, made a 20% water change and added some new sand to the bottom - so the water is still a little muggy.

Our axies are sitting in a separate container in the same room, and we are just wondering how long we should wait til we move them in? Last time we did a bit of a rock and plant re-arrange in the tank our albino axolotl got stressed and wound up in the fridge for a few days to calm down... So we want as little anxiety as possible... :uhoh: Any suggestions?

Haha! Thanks!

Hi Julesy,

Interior design by rearrangements of ornaments and plants is alright just as long as you try preserve the existing bioslime of good bacteria.

Do you have a filter that you keep running at all times? Since the water is the same from the old tank and you have just performed a 20% water change, i would not be too worried. It would be best if you can just do a water parameter check on ammonia, nitrites and nitrates just to be sure.

Personally i would just leave the filter on for a while longer, maybe 1 or 2 days so that particulate matter settle or get filtered. Thereafter the axies can move into their new home.

They would initially take some time to adjust to the new environment so would be stressed. During this time it is most essential to provide optimal water conditions (parameters, temperature, low currents), nutritious food and minimal disturbance (no heavy human traffic passing through, lights on and off etc).

Cheers.

Hey Rayson,

Thanks for your advice! We do have a filter constantly running, the sand seems to have settled and we performed another 20% water change today, before moving the axies in... they seem to be fine (touch wood - they're temperamental little creatures!). It is a little sad not having them in a room that we visit much... I miss seeing them every morning I wake up but the lighting conditions and temperature are so much better.

The next thing we'll get on to is the ammonia check! ;)

Cheers,

Julia
