How many pellets should I feed?

Hi all!
I used to feed exclusively worms; recently I started feeding those pellets from Indiana University to my axolotls. My axos love the pellets and will eat as many as I give them! I don't know how many I should give them, since axos don't always stop eating when they should. I have been feeding 6 pellets every other day to each axolotl. This doesn't seem like enough food because the pellets are quite small. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Depends on size and age of your axolotls.

up to 10cm feed twice a day
10-15cm feed once a day
15-20cm feed once every 2 days
20+cm feed once every 3/4 days

Sorry not sure if that's a lot of pellets really as ours don't eat them, so other than that not much help.

It is also temperature dependent. The cooler they are the less they need to be fed (and the less they will eat).

The pellets I have are half a centimeter in diameter. Gonnie's about 22cm and I feed him one a day. Is that enough? I feed him a pellet and a bit of tubifex worms every 2 days. I'm trying to vary his diet but I don't have the heart to feed live food (I own pet mice so with all the snakes around you get used to it and just can't do it!) so I'm goin to get some cube food for him... Is that enough?

Sorry to hijack!

Hey Guys, We feed our Axies pellets most of the time, and they love them. We feed them Aqua Master Axolotl Food. Same ingredients as in Lukes post and same feeding directions.

The Axies love them, we also feed them blood worms maybe once a week, just for something different.

Hi,
I use the same pellets and
my axies love them.
I just sprinkle a small handful
around the bottom and they eat
what they need and I remove
what's left. I alternate feeds with
worms.
Cheers,
Chris.

Hi and THANKS!

The pellets I use are from the Kentucky University Ambystoma Genetic Stock Center (formerly know as the Axolotl Colony.) I use the "large" pellets which are 5mm (half a centimeter.) The 5mm pellets are recommended for axolotls who are over 8cm long. This is the website - very helpful:
http://www.ambystoma.org/AGSC/

It was hard to get an accurate measurement of my axolotls. They are almost 5 inches (a little under 12cm.)

I got the axies last February. They have grown since then and they are still not full-grown. I don't know how old they are. How quickly do axolotls grow? How old might mine be?

Currently the temperature in our house is 70 degrees F in the day and 60-65 F at night. I think this would make the axolotl tank temperature the same?

Chris, so you give the axies as much as they can eat? I also feed worms on occasion, and the axies regurgitate the worms if I feed more than one or two worms to each axie. I heard this was from over-feeding, since axies don't know when they're full. Wouldn't this happen with pellets (axies eat too many and regurgitate)?

Thanks!!

Hi Nina,
I have not seen my axies regurgitate
their food.
They normally eat their fill from the
scattered pellets, I am not sure
how many they each eat.
When they walk away from the feed area,
I presume that they have finished,
I wait a little longer then remove any left over pellets,
normally there isn't any.
Cheers,
Chris.

Okay, thanks! How do you get the extra food out of the tank? Doesn't it mix with the substrate or get under the rocks, or whatever is in the tank? Do you use substrate? If so, what kind?? Thanks so much! Sorry for all the questions. I am trying to figure out what substrate to use, if any. So I am curious.

Thanks!

Hi Nina,
I use a turkey baster to remove
the leftovers.
I have sand, its much
easier to keep clean.
Cheers,
Chris.

I feed mine a mixture of pellets and mealworms usually every second day and they're a bit bigger than 15 cm.
I feed them three mealworms(heads removed and chopped in half) and a few pellets,I feed them by hand so it's easy to keep track.
Before Nubsy went on a hunger strike he was pretty fat but never spewed or anything.
The way I see it is they lose enthusiasm in jumping at the food when they're starting to get full.

Hmm, tricky question about how many pellets. My adult axie only eats 2-3 pellets every second day, but this may be because she is not perfectly healthy. My 2 'teenage' axies eat about 8 pellets each every second day, and they are getting a bit chunky, haha

Chris, Im in melbourne, where do you get your pellets from? I cant get hold of them anywhere, i even went to all the local pet stores and things to try and order them and they told me that you couldnt get them in Australia. Id like to add them to my little guys diet.

Hi Malachy,
I get my pellets from several pet shops
in Ballarat.
$7.95 for 150g.
Cheers,
Chris

Malachy,

You can defiantly get axolotl pellets in Australia & even Melbourne!

I see them all over the place!

I know for sure that you can get them from a pet shop called Pet Stock and I am pretty sure Pets Paradise have them, if not they would be able to get them.

Regards Eastern_axle

Hey Eastern_axle, it was pets paradise that told me i couldnt get them!Maybe its just the one i go to, i might try another one this week. Where abouts is Pet Stock? Ive seen all types of other pellets, but not ones for my little uns, and have been trying to find them for ages.

Ring Pet Stock they should be able to tell you the closest store.
The reason Pet's Paradise might not have them is because they are franchise own. The owners may not order it.

Regards Eastern_axle

If you don't mind ordering and getting pellets shipped to you, you can get them form several places in the U.S. including Kentucky University. The website is: http://www.ambystoma.org/AGSC/

Many large research universities have axolotl colonies and have food they will sell to you. You could try the websites of Australian universities?

Good luck!

Yeah, and you don't have to order from over in the states.
You can order them online from Ozpet.com,that's where I got them when my petstore ran out.
Have you tried looking in aquariums?
