How often do you engage with your newt? Engagement being how often you are in its tank, feeding it and even touching the newt.

I feed every other day. I try not to touch my newts. Their tank is in my office and I watch them every day while at my computer. They in turn gather together to watch me every day. They seem particularly attracted to me when I am typing on my keyboard.

My engagement with them is limited to feeding and water changes.

Don't ever touch your newt. If you have to move them, use a small plastic container.

I feed every other day. I keep my newt tanks in my dining room where I can view them easily from my dining room table, where I eat and now work daily, and from my living room couch.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
