How often should I feed my axies?

Hey,
my axies are about half a year old now and have reached 15cm in length.
I have been feeding them once a day with frozen axolotl pellets, bloodworms or small pieces of fish, but I'm not sure when I should switch to feeding them every second day. They gobble up everything that looks like food even if their tummies look really full already. Any advice would be appreciated.

Also, my axie tank is 1 metre x 60 cm x 60 cm, holds about 200 litres. It seems to be enough room for all five axies while they are still little, but how many should I have in there once they are grown to their full size?

Cheers in advance for any replies, Steffi

Hey, me again.

my friend has got axies from the same batch of eggs, but her's are half the size of mine. Does that mean I feed them too much?

With large breed puppies it can be detrimental to their health if they grow too fast at a young age, does that happen to axies too?

I'm worried I feed them too much, but they always seem hungry.

What should I do?

Cheers again, Steffi

at the age your axie is id feed him every 2nd day. i think once your tank is axies are full grown about 2 or 3 in the tank would be fine. axolotls will keep eating, they will literally eat untill they are about to puke, this is just incase they run out of food, and then they can survive longer without being fed. a lot of people make the mistake of feeding an axie untill it feels that it has eatin enough.

on another note, good to see another new zealander on here!, were are ya from? im from wellington.

Steffi, the rule of thumb is you want 30cm of tank length per axolotl (if the tank is 30cm wide, otherwise the rule kind of changes). As adults, when it's cool, I feed mine twice a week, 7cm of earthworm at a time. If you overfeed, they'll usually throw it up. As Alex said, they're opportunistic feeders, and will eat as much as they can as fast as they can, in case they don't find food again. It's beneficial for amphibians to grow fast, as the bigger they are, the less likely they'll be eaten by smaller predators.

Thanks for the advice, Alex and Joan. I'll feed them every second day from now on and get a new tank once they are adults

Hi my name is Guy I'm 10.I have just got my first Axolotl.I have a girl Axo & her name is Pebbles, I would like to know how many pellets I should feed her at each time, at the moment she has about 5 pellets twice a day. Thanks for the information about putting axo's in the fridge,it helped my mum to save Pebbles ,now she's swimming around alot & seems happy,

how old is pebbles?. if shes full grown you shouldnt be feeding her twice a day, you should be feeding her once every two days. i feed mine about 7 or 8 pellets each time.

it depends on the size of the pellets and how big she is... if you could give us more info we can help you more

Hi its Guy here, thank you for your replies. We don't know how old Pebbles is my big brother bought her from a Pet Shop for me for Christmas & he thinks she's quite young. She is Albino & about 20cm long from nose to tail tip. She's very cute & if we keep her water between 14c & 17c she seems happy. The pellets I feed her are about half the size of a baby pea.

at that size you should be feeding her once every 2-3 days.
those pellets are quite small so we cant really give you a exact number. worms are worth a go, at that size a 8cm x 5mm worm once every 2-3 days would be sufficent. you can also try sliced up fresh fish, beef heart as a treat, mealworms (crush their heads), black worms etc etc.

thats a great temp your keeping her water at! good job *thumbs up*. how are you doing that seeing as you are in aussie. do you have a chiller?

From this site we found out we could use ice packs so we rotate the ice packs to keep her water about the same temp & if it gets too hot we sit the whole tank in the vege/drinks fridge until she seems refreshed again. Yesterday was 43c here & we had a blackout as well so lucky we had plenty of ice already in the freezer. Thanks for your advice, I will try it. Guy

Today mum and me have moved Pebbles to a new cooler place. We put her under the steps and she likes it.We have'nt tried any of your suggestions yet but we will soon.Thankyou for writing back to us.

I have an axolotl who is between 15-20cm in length and the pet shop has given us meal worms to feed her with. How often and how many should I give her per day/week?

meal worms arnt a very good choice because they are hard and sometimes the axies cant digest them properly and get constipated. i advise you feed normal earth worms as a staple. pet stores dont always hand out correct information.

also if you have to feed them to her cut their heads off! they can bite :S, i think these are the ones that are quite fatty also
