Hey guys! My axie called Frankie is having some trust issues with me. She won’t let me hand feed her, she gets really nervous and unsettled if I touch her, and she freaks out whenever I move her to clean the tank. I understand this may be because my tank temperature is mostly at 29ºC during the day and is mostly at 25ºC during the night. I am very worried for Frankie and I need to know how to help her trust me, and a little on how to cool the tank. (We can’t afford a fridge or cooler or anything like that, and ice cubes and frozen water bottles aren’t doing much.) 😣😖

I’m really worried for Frankie, and would really like some help.

Thanks for reading. 😊

For the heat issue, there are a few things you can do without buying a water cooler. 1: ice cubes/ blocks directly in the water (use filtered or dechlorinated water) or use clean water from the tank, freeze it and put it in the water. reusable ice packs are another very helpful thing. 2: make sure the axolotl tank is away from sunshine, as that will heat up the tank very quickly. 3: placing a small fan on the tank lid and having it blow on the surface of the water will help to circulate the water and cool it down.
hope this helps a little!

i think the heat issue is definitely the most pressing, but as for trust, ive found it builds with time
the more i hand feed/interact with/spend time with my mudkip, the more trust she puts in me-
when i first got her she was terrified of me, swimming frantically when i moved things around, afraid of my hand when i was feeding her, etc.
now she insists on sitting in the palm of my hand when i feed her or do any tank work!! i try not to touch her if at all possible, but she will push my fingers out of the way and sit in my hand every time. it’s very odd, and i have no clue why she does it, but maybe she associates being in my hand with getting fed?
just my thoughts, keep it up!

Dont worry about trust issues its going to be dead soon at those temps.....
i hadn’t realized how warm 29c was until i looked it up just now!! i agree with ian 100% in saying that is far too warm for an axolotl- is that the water temperature or the room temperature? either way, those are lethal temperatures and you need to find a solution immediately !

This will probably sound harsh, but if you can't afford to keep an animal properly, you can't afford the animal, and shouldn't have it. Period. This is animal abuse, straight up, and it will die. For other Fahrenheit users, 29 C is 84.2 F and 25 C is 77 F. If you care at all about your axolotl, you should rehome it, unless you can and will immediately fix the situation.

you could try placing frozen ice packs around the outside of your tank touching the glass, or get a fan and have it blowing onto the tank waters surface. That is what I do and I'm in Australia to! Hope this helps.

The latest thread Frankie's owner started shows the Axolotl with a severe fungal infection though I'm suspicious it might actually not be fungus now but columnaris from the overheating. I'm worried the poor creature was in fact overheated to death and I have not heard back from the owner since they made that thread.

I think that OP could actually face serious legal ramifications right now considering that they have done absolutely nothing to remediate the situation in the three months they held possession of the Frankie. According to Australia laws, the OP could be looking at a serious fine of $110,000 AUD and 2 years in prison.

Couldn't afford a fridge, cooler, or chiller for the animal but you can afford a 2-year prison sentence and $110,000 AUD fine? That's messed up and perverted.

I don't know where at the Frankie's owner is from or what the exact federal statutes in Australia are but I just read this right now:
"In addition to the general anti-cruelty provisions, some anti-cruelty statutes create specific offences of cruelty, including confining an animal or failing to provide adequate or appropriate exercise, exposing an animal to excessive heat or excessive cold, failing to provide adequate veterinary treatment, neglecting an animal so as to cause it pain, tethering an animal for an unreasonable length of time and failing to provide an animal with proper food, drink, or shelter."

This could be another reason why the Frankie's owner has been hiding from us right now. I think they are well aware of the neglect and the abuse they allowed their animal to suffer through. If, in all likelihood, their animal is dead, then it's even possible that the owner could be facing even more severe legal ramifications under Australia law and they would prefer not to state such in online forum.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
