Sorry guys i've tried taking pictures but its too hard to see on my pink male axie. the tips of his gills are turning white and he was in general very pale this morning but started regaining a little color exept in the tips and also on the tips of some of his frills at the top... is this fungus? if so what type of salt to use? i read u can use regular table salt. and do i have to keep him in the fridge or no?
For now i have him separated from my female incase it is fungus.. i assume its contagious?

and i also meant to ask if anyone has pictures that match what i'm describing so i can see if it is fungus...

Fungus is really obvious - it looks like cotton wool/cotton candy - all fluffy and fibrous.

Albinos can have white/silver iridophores in their gills as part of their coloring. They also go pale with inactivity, and 'pink-up' when they get more active.

If you do need to salt bath an axie you need sea salt or aquarium salt, not table salt (it has an anti-caking agent in it). and you can do it at room temp, no need for fridging.

Fungus isn't contagious as such, fungal spores live in the water and get into minor woulnds and slime coat damaged spots. but it's probably better to separate them if it is fungus as an irritable axie can injure another if they fidget or scratch their gills.

thank you so much! these are not just endorphins or whatever you called it however because they have never been there before and i wonder if you remember a post from long ago about my GFP lecuistic that hurt his jaw and wouldn't eat... this was the other time i've noticed his gills turn white. like dead skin or something they never have growth from them tho like you said in a fungus.. i'll keep and eye on it. thank you for your reply

My sister's leucistic axe at the moment has similar white gill tips on the one side. Not fluffy like fungus, just looks as though a few of the gill filaments just turned pure white.

Can't take a picture right now as my camera is broken...but doesn't sound like fungus right? Or should I err on the side of caution and do some salt baths for a few days?

Hey :D
You will know when its fungus as it looks like cotton wool stuck to them.
Salt baths can be quite stressful to an axolotl so i wouldnt do them unless your sure its fungus.
Axies go pale when they are resting and if they have been resting for a long time they can go very very pale, when i first got my axies i used to sometimes take the lid off the tank and move them to ensure they were alive haha.

Have you tried gently rubbing the bits you think may be fungus to see if they come off?

I haven't tried to actually, but will when I clean their tank later. He's still acting like his normal self so sure he is fine. I'll just wait and see and do the salt baths when I'm absolutely sure it's fungus :)
