Theres a possibility we are going to be moving from South Dakota to Michigan which is typically 2 day drive. I thought about putting the axolotl in a rubbermaid container with clean water but im not sure

If its possible find a cooler big enough for the axolotl. This will provide better insulation. Periodically check on it though.

You need something a big bigger than a tub - a beer cooler or picnic box that is insulated and water tight would be ideal - cool and dark is best for an axie to prevent stress.

You'll need to change the water on the 2nd day, make sure you have dechlorinator handy and a tub or bucket to make the change.

We might end up flying there instead of driving is it possible to actually bring the axolotl on a plane in a container and just hold it on my lap? my mom suggested the idea and im not sure if you can even do that with axolotls or if they would do well on a plane

If you are flying then the only way is to ship them. When I had 2 pacman frogs and was flying down to florida I checked with the airline and the only animals they allow are dogs and cats, even that has restrictions. I looked at other airlines and from what I can see none allow pets other than cats and dogs. I ended up driving 17 hours with my frogs. I wouldn't even risk trying to keep anything that might break and is important in your check in. I had my canister filter along with some other supplies and decorations, and found this house ornament that i've had forever and really wanted it for my axolotls. TSA went through my bag because of 'suspicious items' and didn't even bother repackaging anything. The house was cracked and broken :/

Absolutely not. Security would never allow it - besides the actual animal, you're not supposed to bring liquids of any kind on flights. Bomb risk. And security is completely nuts about it - they would make you kill the animal before letting you on a plane with it.

do you need a license to ship an axolotl?

I don't think you require a license unless you're shipping it out of the country or to hawaii. Obviously you can't ship it to any state that it's illegal (nj, ca)
