Hi,

I was wondering how you guys vary your blue spotted salamanders' diets. I don't want to feed her meal worms. She'll eat them, but I've heard enough bad stuff about them that I don't want her to. Not to mention I've had issues with an other salamander that might have been caused by them.

I feed her bits of nightcrawlers. I try feeding her tiny crickets whenever I find one among the crickets I buy for my gray tree frog, but she rarely eats them (maybe they're too small?). I can't really buy batches of medium sized crickets just for her because there are way more than enough in the smallest batches and most of them would just die.

I don't believe my local petshop carries wax worms and most of their invertebrates are pretty much the same size as my salamander.

Try a local Gas station, many carry live bait like waxworms. They normally carry other goodies you could try out too

You could try feeding slugs, isopods (pill-bugs), snails, or beetles. You can catch these outside but make sure they are pesticide/chemical free.

All the bait worms around here are nightcrawlers (so much for variety, lol). Although, I guess if I were to find an actual fishing store, things would be different.

I found silk worms at my local petshop. Would these be good? They seem a little big, but there's a chance they're not too much so.

Would nightcrawlers and silk worms be a varied enough diet?

Do you guys supplement with calcium? If so, do you use straight up calcium or one that also has D3?
