How you can tell it's Fall

In the spring, the worms I caught in the yard were small and manageable. Now they're as big as my baby corn snakes. Eeew, they're hard to cut up. They fight back.
I guess you can't really tell from the picture, but they're as big around as pencils, and just as long or longer.

This isn't a nightcrawler! It's just your run-of-the-mill backyard worm!

The snake just hatched last week. 15 of 16 eggs, Jasmine's second clutch this season. They haven't even had their post-natal shed yet,
but signs say it'll be soon. If you look close, you can see the baby's eyes are overcast.

I know exactly what you mean, they are almost intimidating when you try to deal with them...
I catch them when they come half way out of ground on wet nights, but it's an art I tell you...
If they have any leverage with the angle you pull them at, they will escape every time, they are STRONG!!

I would say that your "run of the mill backyard worms" are, in fact, nightcrawlers. And here's an interesting fact: North America had no nightcrawlers until they were brought by immigrants, who brought over seeds, livestock, and other agricultural starter materials infested with Old World worms. So nightcrawlers are a non-native species for us.

Oh, I thought nightcrawlers were much uglier and really dark. I don't know if I'm disappointed or not!
I think I just don't like the idea of something with as gross-sounding a name as "nightcrawler" living in my yard.
