Hyallella azteca

Further to the discussion, my daphnia culture suddenly teemed with life again and in among the harvesting were quite a few gammarus so I observed them in the tanks as I fed my cynops and larger verrucosus larvae. The cynops consumed them within 5 minutes (they are in a 36x12x15 tank) the ones in with the verrucosus did not last even that long, it consumed all 4 I had put in within 2 minutes.

Paul Bachhausen has a culture going of Hyalella Azteca. And I'm about to order a batch from a German website. Did some research on them, including on Pauls personal website.

Temperature to keep them in should be between 20-28°C with lots of light. Keep them in a bare bottom tank. The plants best have small leaves.
They reproduce rather slow.
They feed on all kind of organic wastes (plants, meat, fish, mosquito larves, vegetables,...) The tank does build up nitrates if you let the waste build up to much.

In this topic we talked about it. Paul said they reproduce in his ensicauda tank. In his signature you can find a link to his (german) personal website.

My German is rudimentary, but I'm used to ordering things from Germany online (I get at least 50% of my computer parts from German e-tailers).

Danke!

The shipping prices were kind of steep if you are not buying massive amounts. 26,60 euros for shipping to Sweden.

They have a shop too, wouldn't you love to have that shop in your hometown? I know at least one Belgian guy...

Shipping prices are high indeed, and some of the stuff is cheaper in my local shop (not all though). But most of what they offer has never been heard off by my local petshop.

Let's see how my girlfriend thinks about having grindal worms in the house

Hi, i recently purchased a starter culture for scuds. The caresheet left much to be desired. Does anyone have a comprehensive caresheet for scuds? How often am i allowed to harvest them? Can i use java moss for them?

thanks a lot in advance.

I just noticed sachs has H. azteca http://www.aquaculturestore.com

"amph1 - Fresh Water Amphipods (scuds) - lot of 30 - Most are Hyallela azteca and range in size from 1/16 inch to about 3/8 an inch. These secretive little "shrimp" like to hide in vegetation, and like to come out at night

, Easy to culture with pond muck, paper towels in water, or on aquatic vegetation. Makes a great feed for intermediate sized fish, good for starting a pond culture."

Hi all,
thank you for the detailed information!
